Summer Youth Job Program 2009

About the program

Gateway and Capital Area Michigan Works! Summer Job Program is for young adults between the ages of 14 and 24 that will have the opportunity to learn about different occupations, develop positive work habits and earn money! But most of all, will gain valuable work experience to help them build resume and prepare them for future careers.

Summer Work Opportunities and Goals

The program will offer opportunities with many different jobs and organizations, including government agencies, nonprofits, small businesses, museums, social service agencies, community organizations, cultural institutions, and many more.

Some of the goals of the program are :

• Provide the youth with the necessary skills to become competitive in the job market.
• Educate them about Postive work habits.
• Provide a means for youth to gain experience in different types of work and improve thier skills.
• Train youth to become effective in finding a job on their own.

My Experience and Testimonial

This program was an incredible opportunity, I remember I was having difficulty figuring out how to find and a get job because my confidence was low.  I went to Michigan Works! and someone told me about the program and I was enrolled right away. The good thing about the program was that we were not just working, we also had to go to school and train.  We learned a lot of beneficial aspect on the school training such as, Attendance Policies, Work Ethics, Sexual Harassment, Work Place Safety, Legal and Tax Issues, Getting and maintaining a job!!! , Get G.E.D,  Appropriate work Attire and lots more.  I also had the opportunity to work in office environment which was huge experience for me. I learned how to build websites, scan documents, and other office work. My favorite things about the program were the people I worked with and for. I will like to say thanks to TJ, Ashley Evans, and Mark, Bill my supervisor , case managers Jessica and Jennifer , and director of the program Jennifer. Thank you to everyone who made this program possible.
